The Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s University, invites applications for the Chair in Mine Design. This is a tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor. The preferred starting date of the appointment is July 1, 2020.
The Chair in Mine Design is a key role with the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining with a mandate that includes the development of innovative mining methods and techniques for minimizing and mitigating Geomechanics hazards and risks. This Chair role was established by the Government of the Province of Ontario, in consultation with the mining industry, in response to the recommendations of the 1986 report of the Provincial Inquiry into Ground Control and Emergency Preparedness (the Stevenson Commission). The scope of the Chair in Mine Design encompasses the broad spectrum of design challenges and solutions for underground mining in hard rock. Candidates for this position are expected to have a record of research accomplishment and practice in areas such as: Geomechanical Mine Design, Rock Mass Characterization, Experimental Rock Mechanics including Rock Fracture, Rock Mass Behaviour including Rockbursting and Seismicity, Ground Support, Numerical Modelling, and Instrumentation.
Candidates must hold at least one degree in Engineering and a PhD in a relevant discipline completed at the start date of the appointment. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, or eligibility to acquire registration in Canada, is a requirement. Relevant industrial experience is a significant asset.
The main criteria for selection are academic, research, and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding. The candidate must also be able to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, demonstrate an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the department’s programs, and provide evidence of an ability to work in an interdisciplinary and student-centered environment. The successful candidate will be expected to make contributions through service to the department, the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
