The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Queen’s University invites applications for a Tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with specialization in Indigenous land-based knowledge and knowledge transmission, and experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2022.

Candidates must have culturally based Indigenous knowledge of the traditional Anishinaabe and/or Haudenosaunee Territories at the start date of the appointment, demonstrated through lived experience within an Indigenous community context. The main criteria for selection will be based on existing or potential connections with local Indigenous communities in order to (1) engage with local communities for the delivery of land-based courses within the Indigenous Studies programs offered through the Department; and (2) facilitate the fourth-year Indigenous Studies students’ capstone projects (see below). The successful candidate will also have demonstrated excellence in active, community-engaged research and/or knowledge transmission (research and research productivity includes Indigenous community-based searching; exploration, meaning-making, and knowledge sharing in contexts and forms appropriate to the community); appropriate language and traditional knowledge credentials; and references from an established Indigenous community or communities. It is hoped that the position will attract candidates from a range of career pathways.

Prospective candidates should be aware that the Queen’s University Policy Regarding Mandatory Vaccination Requirements for In-person University Activities requires ALL Community Members, including those holding faculty appointments, be Fully Vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to participating in any In-person University Activities. This is a condition of employment for all employees who are required to attend University Property to perform their employment responsibilities. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality teaching and community liaison initiatives. Candidates must provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment. The successful candidate will also make contributions through teaching and service (working on committees, advising students, etc.) to the department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures; the Faculty of Arts & Sciences; the University; and/or the broader community. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The ideal candidate will have culturally based and lived experience of the Indigenous knowledge of traditional Anishinaabe and/or Haudenosaunee territories around Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River. The new hire will need to have a positive record of Indigenous community connections in the Queen’s area (Montreal – Ottawa – Toronto) in order to facilitate the capstone and land-based courses within the Department (Ph.D. optional).

The land-based course is normally offered during the spring or summer term with a combination of in-class academic inquiry and land-based exploration and learning. The new capstone course will explore issues in Indigenous Studies, through library-based research and/or community-based work in partnership with local Indigenous organizations and communities, integrating the various threads of the plan into a single capstone project (reciprocity; respectful engagement; general and specific understandings of Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, believing, and being; Indigenous language(s) and culture(s); Indigenous theories and research methodologies; land-based learning; and diverse approaches from options courses).

• an outline of experience working with/within the Indigenous community/ies in the Queen’s area, attesting to sources of learning, experience, and/or cultural knowledge
