Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine - Locum Opportunities

Eastern Health has locum opportunities available for the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre (BPHCC).
The facility has 10 inpatient beds which includes one palliative care bed. The Protective Care Unit is a 12 bed bungalow. The services include 24-hour emergency services, laboratory services, x-ray (plain films), diabetic education, dietician, chemotherapy services, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, mental health, outpatient clinics and inpatient services. The centre is associated with the long-term care facility Golden Heights Manor which consists of 70 beds (level 3 care) which includes 1 respite bed.
The Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville is the referral site and is approximately 110 km away. The hospital has 47 acute care beds, 42 long-term care beds, and two respite care beds. Services include: anesthesia, chemotherapy, family practice, general surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, ICU/Cardiac, internal medicine, laboratory, palliative care, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, respiratory therapy, ultrasonography and 24-hour emergency (category A). Other services include nursing, nutritional, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pastoral care, social work, diabetic education and speech language pathology. Visiting clinics include: neurology and ophthalmology. The long-term care patients are located in the Dr. Albert O’Mahony Manor. This is a long-term care facility attached to the hospital. There are 2 other facilities affiliated with the Clarenville Hospital and located in the town. Coish Place houses 2 Psychiatrists and various community support programs including dialysis. The Bungalow is a 10-bed protective care facility.
Job Summary
SHORT TERM LOCUMS are expected to provide call in coverage for the emergency department and after hours call. Critical escorts to another facility may be required, as well as care of inpatients. Clinic work can be arranged on the request of the physician and with training to the EMR system which would be provided.
LONGER TERM LOCUMS are expected to provide chronic disease management, long term care, palliative care, respite care, prenatal care, emergency call / patient stabilization and transfer, minor surgery and acute in-patient care. The physician will be placed on a rota to provide call in coverage for the emergency department and after hours call, scheduled ambulatory clinics, inpatient care, and walk-in clinics. Training to the EMR system is required and will be arranged by the facility.
All locums are expected to demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person and family centered care as much as possible and work with clinicians and other physicians who can assist with the care. Locums must demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements.
Required Qualifications:
• Medical Degree.
• Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification (or equivalent) in Family Medicine.
• Deemed eligible for licensure to practice by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador. For more information visit: cpsnl@cpnsl.ca.

• Up to date Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certificate.
Hours of Work:
- Emergency room shifts are 24 hours from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m.
- Clinics are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Remuneration: To be discussed.
Reimbursements:
There is a daily meal allowance of $43.70 per day for each day worked. If travelling in a personal vehicle, a mileage rate determined by the provincial government is paid. A vehicle rental can be approved upon request and the gas receipts will be reimbursed (no mileage will be paid). If traveling to the province, the most economical airline flights will be approved, along with the rental of a mid-size car. Gas receipts will be reimbursed. A hotel room can be provided upon arrival in NL, if required.
Locums not working full time elsewhere in NL can be reimbursed for some CPSNL and CMPA related costs. Locums outside of NL are entitled to 1 travel day to the NL and 1 travel day from NL at $875 for each day.
